Harwich to get new wind farm skills college

A NEW state-of-the-art education centre is to be created in Harwich to give young people the skills needed to work on wind farms.

Harwich International Port has joined forces with Colchester Institute to develop The Energy Skills Centre, which will be based at the port's Hamilton House.

Both parties have now signed a memorandum of understanding which will see the college invest to refurbish and fit out the building.

The centre will be focused on engineering and will be designed to meet the needs of employers in the Harwich area and the emerging offshore wind energy industry.

Danny Clough, principal of Colchester Institute, said it is hoped training programmes in engineering and welding will start from early 2012 and that as many as 200 students will be trained at the centre during 2012/13.

He said: “Colchester Institute welcomes the opportunity to work with far sighted employers to develop such a vocational facility in Harwich.

“The college is particularly pleased to provide opportunities for students who wish to develop careers within engineering, at large, and energy creation, specifically.”
